The history of Coazzolo

The origins

In 1196, Oberto di Covacolo documented the existence of the town of Coazzolo for the first time. At the end of the 13th century, the territory belonging to the diocese of Alba was conquered by the Astensians; the bishop ceded the castle and villa as a fief to the Cacherano d'Asti family, who took over the preaching. In 1287, William II Cacherano settled in the Castello.

Sovereigns and transformations

In 1529, with the treaty of “Catéau Cambrèsis”, Coazzolo and its castle became possessions of Charles V of Habsburg, who granted them as a fief as a wedding gift to the daughter of the King of Portugal “Most Serene Madame Beatrice”, Duchess of Savoy . During the Baroque era, the Castle was "gentrified" with external interventions, changing the medieval appearance into a more gentle one according to the standards of the period.
